Environmental responsibility is an indispensable aspect of SHD, a fact that has become increasingly evident through the influx of natural disasters over the past decade. The Payson Center’s commitment to educating students through a combination of study and practice is especially evident in its environmental course offerings, which focus on environmentally responsible policies and technologies for developing countries as well as strategies for rehabilitating distressed environments. Through the Payson Center, Tulane University is currently the only accredited university in the U.S. offering training and certification in Permaculture Design, an area that is especially relevant to southern Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina.
