The Payson Center was founded in 1998 by Tulane’s former university vice-president Dr. William Bertrand and Tulane’s President Emeritus, Dr. Eamon Kelly. Dr. Kelly currently is the Executive Director of the Payson Center and served as a former Chairman of NSF’s National Science Board. Dr. Bertrand is the former Director of the Payson Center and serves on the Infectious Disease Advisory Board of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Drs. Kelly and Bertrand are both full professors and hold endowed chairs at the University. Their extensive international knowledge and experience forms the foundation for the Payson Center, which envisions a world that is economically viable, environmentally sustainable and socially just.
Faculty in the Payson Center come from many disciplines so that students can understand and learn how to apply what we know about improving human development. Key to our approach is using information communication technologies in our learning, our projects and in problem-solving. With new technologies guiding the development field, the future economic survival of peoples and nations will depend upon the number of individuals equipped with the skills and competencies necessary for furthering social and economic development. We also focus on learning and using rigorous analytical methods for advancing research and for evaluating ideas and work in the field.
