Students who wish to be considered for admission to the graduate program should apply to the Payson Center. Applicants applying for admission should meet the following deadlines: April 15 for the fall semester, October 15 for the spring semester.

General Requirements

Degree program applicants who hold bachelor’s degrees from recognized institutions may be admitted to the Payson Center if their academic records and personal attributes indicate the ability to pursue advanced study successfully. Applicants must present evidence, to the satisfaction of the department or the program committee concerned, of adequate preparation for the subjects in which they seek to specialize.
A student admitted to the Payson Center in a degree program must be continuously registered during the academic year (exclusive of Summer Session) as full-time or part-time student. Under exceptional circumstances a student may be granted leave by the Academic Director of the Payson Center, and during such period of leave, a student will be considered in continuous registration without payment of fee.

The application requirements are as follows:

(1) $45 application fee
(2) completed application form (click here to download the form);
(3) three completed recommendation forms;
(4) official transcripts of all undergraduate records and of any previous graduate work;
(5) a statement of purpose; and
(6) official record of scores on the Graduate Record Examination General (GRE) Test. Use the Payson Center's Designated Institution code (5879) when taking the GRE.
Please note that we will only accept fully completed applications for review.
Probationary admission may be granted upon conditions which the applicant must fulfill in the first semester or first year of graduate school enrollment in order to have the probationary status changed to regular degree status.

Standardized Test Requirement

GRADUATE RECORD EXAMINATION (GRE)

Applicants for admission must take at their own expense the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination. The test scores will be used, with other data, to determine eligibility for admission and to aid in counseling the applicant after admission. Students should write directly to the Graduate Record Examination, Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 6000, Princeton, New Jersey 08541-6000 to request an examination. For more information regarding the GRE, visit the GRE web-site at: http://www.gre.org

Foreign Students

TEST OF ENGLISH AS FOREIGN LANGUAGE (TOEFL)

Non-US citizens applying for admission must present satisfactory evidence of sufficient competence in English to read, write, speak and understand. Ordinarily, the applicant will demonstrate competence by presenting an acceptable score on TSE (Test of Spoken English), normally a minimum score of 220. If TSE is not available in the applicant’s area of the world, TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) may be taken instead, with a minimum score of 600 in the written test and 260 in the computer-based test acceptable for admission. For information about these exams, write TOEFL/TSE Services, P.O. Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541-6151 or see http://web1.toefl.org.

An applicant whose competence in English is unproven or insufficient may be admitted with probationary status on the condition that competence will be proven or improved. The student may be required to prove competence by earning an acceptable score on a test of English (either TSE, TOEFL or a Tulane University test). A student who scores below the acceptable level of competence may be required to register for less than a full graduate program and to take an English course. A foreign applicant is also required to take the Graduate Record Examination.

Foreign applicants are also required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
