New Internship Opportunities with Fundación Paraguaya for 2014-2015

Payson Center Doctoral Student, Martin Burt is the founder of Fundación Paraguaya. Fundación Paraguaya (FP) is a self-sustainable, not-for-profit social enterprise, which since its foundation in 1985 has spearheaded microfinance and entrepreneurship in Paraguay. With more than 300 staff in 28 offices across the country, FP develops and implements practical, innovative, and sustainable solutions to eliminate poverty, in order to create decent conditions for all families, through four inter-related strategies.

Fundación Paraguaya is pleased to offer Internship Opportunities for students and graduates interested in:

Microfinance Program Internships

Intended for: students or graduates with interests related to Microfinance, Commerce, Economics, Marketing, Social Projects, International Development and related fields.

Interns may choose to work in two or more related internships depending on their time available and particular interests. They will be supervised by the Microfinance Manager, and will be working with other Microfinance staff and / or interns.

1. Customer Retention

  • The intern will work on the following activities:
  • Build strong relationships with customers by increasing loyalty while reducing financial risk.
  • Perform a field investigation to determine the reason for not renewing loans, through surveys, interviews, customer visits.
  • Develop customer retention strategies that may include designing new products or offering new benefits to meet the customer´s needs.
  • Develop policies for implementing strategies.
  • Prepare a report on the results obtained.
  • Conduct the final evaluation and present the results of work performed.

2. Principles Of Client Protection Service

The intern will work on the following activities: 

  • Based on the assessments made of the principles of consumer protection, make the necessary implementations to reach certification, in addition to designing the internal and external communications, field evaluation implementations, and interviews with customers and partners.
  • Perform a detailed assessment on the principles of consumer protection, including document review, evaluations, office visits, and client interviews. The main objective is to meet the requirements of the Smart Campaign.

The principles that we cover are:

  • Avoid over-indebtedness
  • Transparent and accountable prices
  • Practice appropriate collection
  • Appropriate design and distribution of products
  • Ethical staff behavior
  • Mechanisms for redress of grievances
  • Privacy of client data

3. Online Fundraising Strategy Projects

The intern will work on the following activities:

  • Develop strategies and plans for fundraising through online platforms that have programs like GlobalGiving, SoSense, and/or The Resource Foundation. As part of the internship the intern will conduct site visits to offices, schools and programs of Fundación Paraguaya to collect success stories which will be developed and retold through blogs and new projects in the online platforms.
  • The goal is to develop a strategy for fundraising, and improve the image / visibility of Fundación Paraguaya in existing platforms.

4. Develop A Business Plan Of The Microfinance Program

The intern will work on the following activities:

Upgrade the existing business plan with a focus on a poverty elimination strategy that can display the way forward in the next three years in order to achieve the expected growth in line with the strategic plan. As part of the internship the intern will conduct field visits to various offices of the Foundation to become familiar with the various products and working methods of the Microfinance Program including the Women´s committee, individual loans, micro-franchising, etc. The intern should consult the current strategic plan, industry trends, key competitors, areas and departments of the institution, business strategy, expected growth, the growth trend of the country and its concentration as well as the government's strategy.

5. Characterization Study Of Credits Posted As Uncollectible

The intern will work on the following activities:

Take the loan portfolio which is considered uncollectible and make a table of features that make the grant. Make a comparison with the previous year to identify common features and matches of credits. Conduct an analysis of recovery of bad debt for the last three years. Present a summary of the main conclusions and recommendations.

6. Study Of Customer Satisfaction Of Foundation Paraguaya

The intern will work on the following activities:

Create a survey to measure the satisfaction of customers of the three programs of the Foundation. Apply the survey using the platforms of the institution, for which it must maintain close communication with the interior offices (visits, phone calls). Prepare a report, a consolidated program, and a presentation to share with the General Manager.

7. Market Study

The intern will work on the following activities:

Identify key industry competitors to define Microfinance program strengths and weaknesses, and opportunities for growth as set out in the Strategic Plan. As part of the internship, field visits and research will be conducted to identify the products and services offered online.

8. Best Practices Of Officers, Advisors And Managers

The intern will work on the following activities:

Create a document which summarizes the best practices of managers, officers and advisers of the Foundation in order to successfully systematize and replicate across all offices. The internship will consist of a first instance in identifying successful people by criteria of financial and non-financial results of the past three years; observe day to day practices of each manager for each office of the Foundation, track and record each manager´s practices. Identify and systematize data, deliver a document of best practices and practices which are not recommended.

9. Microfinance

Microfranchises are business models offered to the women of the committees so that they can diversify and increase their income with the primary aim of eradicating poverty.

The Fundacion to date has developed 6 microfranchises, and others are under investigation before launching the proposal.

The intern will work on the following activities:

  • Conduct a market research to investigate future Microfranchises to be applied.
  • Develop business records.
  • Analyze possible micro franchisers in Paraguay.
  • Study impact of micro-franchise women in committees.
  • Prepare promotional materials for Microfranchise.
  • Other.

Poverty Elimination Program Internships

Intended for: students or graduates with interests related to social work, social and community psychology, evaluation and monitoring of projects, impact assessment of projects, community development, international development and related.

Interns may choose to work in two or more related internships depending on their time available and particular interests. They will be supervised by the General Manager, and will be working with other staff and / or interns.

1.  Monitoring And Evaluation Of The Stoplight Methodology

The intern will work on the following activities:

Visit Fundacion Paraguaya's microfinance offices to observe the work and activities of the credit assessors. The intern should identify strengths and weaknesses of the poverty elimination stoplight methodology and propose solutions to the problems identified.

2. Intervention Strategies For The Poverty Elimination By Indicators

The intern will work on the following activities:

Process and analyze existing data of the poverty elimination stoplight. Conduct field research for interventions strategies by indicator. The intern should identify existing resources at both a local and a national level, with the aim of creating partnerships in the pursuit of eliminating poverty among families in the 50 indicators.

3.  Mentoring Families Living In Poverty

Fundacion Paraguaya will assign the intern with a number of families participating in the Stoplight program. The objective of this internship is to create the figure of a "mentor" to accompany the family in the process of escaping poverty. The mentor / intern must document the actions taken during the process of leaving poverty in order to suggest solutions that could be used for all families participating in the program.

Entrepreneurial Education Program Internships

Intended for: students or graduates with interests related to education, social work, entrepreneurship, evaluation and monitoring of educational programs,, audiovisual production, international development and related.

Interns may choose to work in two or more related internships depending on their time available and particular interests. They will be supervised by the Entrepreneurial Education Manager, and will be working with other staff and / or interns.

1. Assistant for Basic Education Programs

The intern will work on the following activities:

  • Assist in the coordination of public school Basic Education Programs in Central District of Paraguay.
  • Visit the schools in which the programs are applied, in order of monitor them.
  • Interact with principals and teachers, analyze the work done at the schools and propose solutions to the identified problems.

2. Assistant for Youth Program's Coordination

The intern will work on the following activities:

  • Assist with educational programs carried out in all schools participating in Junior Achievement.
  • Study, analyze and understand the educational programs, specifically economic educational program by The Company, The Cooperative and Community Leadership.
  • Travel around the country to conduct monitoring at schools with other members of the Foundation, and interact with students.
  • Assist the Program`s coordination to organize international events, create educational programs and conduct administrative work.

3. Audiovisual Assistant

The intern will work on the following activities:

Produce audiovisual materials of the Entrepreneurial Education programs, working in the Pre-production, production and post production. Groups of entrepreneurs are found throughout the country, so the intern will have to travel within Paraguay.

Communication Department Internships

Intended for: students or graduates with interests related to communication, graphic design, marketing, advertising, web design, translation and interpretation and related.

Interns may choose to work in two or more related internships depending on their time available and particular interests. They will be supervised by the Communication Department Manager, and will be working with other staff and / or interns.

1. Strategic Communication Plan

The intern will work on the following activities:

Visit the various programs of the Foundation, study the strategic plan and define the communication goals. Develop a OPPM (One Page Project Manager) format for a Newsletter.

2. Networks

The intern will work on the following activities:

  • Create, analyze, understand and address the information produced for social networks and monitor the actions of social media users. Create a digital communication strategy for Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Instagram. Conduct social media planning.
  • Help FP define the success of our work and determine the actual impact to the target groups.

3. Graphic Design

The intern will work on the following activities:

  • Prepare advertising graphic design, publishing, web design, packaging, signage design and multimedia.
  • The intern will need to manage basic design programs (Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, etc.)

4. Translation - Web

The intern will work on the following activities:

Spanish and English translation of Fundación Paraguaya´s website content and other required instructional materials.
