PGSA Meeting – January 23, 2013

Attendees: Max A., Amy B., Kami B., Andre D., Kathi H.,  Mina J., Zaw L., Mina M.

Agenda:

New Officers:

  • Max & Andre – focusing on social engagements and communications
  • Max will be assisting with links to conferences coming through internship at WTC

Events:

PGSA has separate Facebook account people should “like it” to stay up to date on events

  • Happy Hours –
    • need ideas for locations (list generated by group), also considering the possibility of hosting HHs at student/faculty homes
    • Friday 25th – Columns (tentative – may need to change for parade route considerations)
  • Academic Workshops – will establish dates soon
    • Some services are being provided through the graduate student office (how much should PGSA continue to provide similar opportunities? – these services sometimes fill up quickly & IDEV has some special considerations so it is preferred if PGSA should still work w/ this office to tailor some events specifically for Payson students)
  • IDCS -  Amy firming up presenters and dates
    • strong support for student-led research
    • Josh S., Andrew Ward open to presenting
    • Dr. Sloan has contacted professor teaching course on Arab Spring and he is interested in
  • Faculty research presentations – Kami will check with necessary parties to establish potential date
  • Graduation Plans
    • General agreement on May 17th for combined picnic and grad ceremony
    • Smaller shelter is fine
    • Kami doing research on shelter availability and will follow-through with reservations
  • Tubing trip – potentially May 11th (offset cost for students) Wayne’s World
  • Organize excursion meet-ups for festivals
  • Other non-Payson events of note:
    • Law School Enviro Summit – Feb. 22-24
    • Mid-East Film Fest at Zeitgeist – March 6-12
    • Careers for the Common Good event – March 12

Budget:

  • Update: ~$3100 in funds for the rest of the Spring semester (setting aside $60 for Mina M. & $55 for Maille F. conference funding, as well as estimating $750-1000 for graduation event)
  • What to do with any left over funds at the end of the semester
    • Language course materials – can students get a discount for personal materials and/or get a discount for materials package to be housed at Payson?
    • Tubing trip – potentially May 11th (offset cost for students)
  • Maille F. approved for full conference funding request

Suggestions:

  • Start creating/fostering alumni network (as website version is opt-in and not well-utilized) to build stronger connections for current & former students
  • Post internship links list on student area of website
  • Start a bulletin-board site for student exchanges (books, apartment postings, etc.)

Next meeting postponed from Feb. 6th until Feb. 13th
