The United Nations has declared 2002 "the International Year of Ecotourism," making this already hot topic even more timely. Martha Honey's PowerPoint presentation, "Ecotourism and Sustainable Development: Who
Owns Paradise?" (based on her 1999 book by the same title) will trace the origins of ecotourism, its definition, its growth, and its current split into three trajectories: ecotourism "lite", "greenwashing," and real ecotourism, including examples of each. She will conclude by assessing where ecotourism is today and by outlining some of the present
challenges facing ecotourism as we approach the 2002 international summit.
