One Young World (OYW) is the only youth-dominated event that brings together more countries than the Olympics.  I was selected and awarded a scholarship to represent Panama at this year's Summit in Johannesburg.

USMA, UNDP and Payson Center Press Conference to launch Tulane "Panama Field Work Experience" Masters Degree Program

On September 6th, Payson Center Executive Director, Colin Crawford, the Catholic University of Santa María la Antigua (USMA) and the United Nations Program for Development (UNDP) held a press conference at USMA in Panama City to announce an innovative opportunity for prospective graduate students who want to pursue a Masters in International Development at Tulane University, with a year of study and a United Nations internship in Panama City, and a year of study in New Orleans.

As a trained sociologist, whenever I travel I become most engaged and fascinated with the structure of society — history, equity or lack thereof, colonialism’s impact, gender, race and identity. Now as a student in development, this sociological perspective is forever in my mind, as I work to bring about positive change, while being mindful of my own relative privilege and sense of not really belonging here. My primary questions are: How can we undo the wrongs of the past? How can poor people in developing countries gain access to basics that are or should be covered under universal human rights? How can we more equitably use the Earth’s resources and allow everyone — not only the rich — to live comfortably? What are the most graceful and non-imposing ways of assessing a community’s needs and wants?

Summer Field Research in Panama

Greetings from Panama City, Panama!  Thanks to the Stone Center for Latin American Studies’ Summer Field Research Grant, I’m here researching changes in the city’s Historic District (called Casco Viejo, Casco Antiguo, and San Felipe interchangeably) since becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 along with the archaeological ruins of Panamá Viejo.  I call this process ‘culture-based urban revitalization’.
