In Rwanda, the Payson Center is very lucky to have as a partner, Instructional Technologist, Saurabh Kamalapurkar. Saurabh began working with the Tulane International LLC Rwanda Country Office in October 2013. Since then he has been collaborating with Payson Senior Program Manager for Technology, Adam Papendieck and others at the University of Rwanda College of Medical and Health Sciences (UR-CMHS) to provide instructional design and technology-enabled teaching and learning workshops. He has been consulting with faculty from UR-CMHS to create more engaging courses using open source tools. During my visit, the Principal of UR-CMHS and the Rwandan Minister of Education both expressed their desire to see the work Saurabh and Adam have developed — The Rwanda HSI-Net: Health Sciences Innovation Network — expand into other parts of the university. While working full-time for Tulane International LLC in Rwanda, Saurabh has been working to his PhD in education and technology at Yale University and expects to defend his dissertation soon. Saurabh reports that he was humbled by the dedication and enthusiasm of the University of Rwanda's School of Medicine and Pharmacy cohort — and that training continued during power cuts!
